Last night the exhibition “16 Women” was opened at the Center for Culture in Pozarevac. As part of the global campaign “16 days of activism against violence against women”, 16 women from Serbian public life stood in front of the lens to support all women facing psychological violence, pointing to this subtle but often invisible form of abuse.

The exhibition was created during 2023 under the auspices of the Embassy of Sweden. Amateur photographers from the Factory of Photographers, under the mentorship of Aleksandra Popović Petkovic and Aleksandar Montenegrin, creatively stood behind these portraits. The organization FeMin Collective is behind the organization of the exhibition in Pozarevac.

The exhibition was opened by Aleksandra Popović Petković in front of the Photographers Factory and Ljiljana Todorović Jovanović in front of the FeMin collective. Ljiljana pointed out that, according to research, the most unsafe place for a woman is her home and stressed the importance of raising awareness that gender violence is not a private problem, and that women who are psychologically and physically abused need to be empowered and speak out.

-They believe, like the environment, that it is a problem that is kept behind four walls. We should say that they are not to blame for the violence they suffer and that they did not cause it. We are here to help them and empower them to get out of the cycle of violence- she said.

This project is supported through the Human Rights Leaders Programme, which Hartefact implements with the financial support of the European Union. The programme, which runs from 2024 to 2026, addresses issues of social exclusion, violence, and the position of marginalised and minority groups in Serbia, fostering a democratic political culture and respect for human rights. Through targeted interventions, the project aims to increase practical understanding of the challenges faced by human rights defenders, as well as critically examine patterns of violence against those representing marginalized communities.
